6-String Banjos, Defibrillators, And Doggie Diapers….

A few weeks ago I bought a 6-string banjo.

Why did the Gretsch Guitar company make a 6 string banjo? (Normally they have four or five). For lazy guitar players like me who want to play banjo yet don?t feel like learning the different fingerings normal banjos use. Gretsch makes them for a specific purpose. Everything people create has a purpose, from defibrillators to driveway tar to doggie diapers – everything has a purpose. (Sorry to put that image in your brain. My dog is lying right in front of me wearing a diaper. We?ll talk about that another time).

God created every single one of us for a purpose. His purpose. He has a specific plan for your life and specific reasons he made you. Maybe you don?t know God?s purpose for you yet. God does. And he won?t fail to fulfill his plan for your life.

The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. (Psalm 138:8)

God?s ultimate purpose for you is that you bring him glory, and in ways that no one else will. He created you for a unique display of his love, power and grace. He created you to know, worship, love and enjoy him. He created you to become like Jesus. He created you to bless others.

Whatever it is, and whatever it involves, God?s plan for you is good. It is the best and most wonderful purpose for your life. It?s better than any purpose you could devise.

The Lord?s purpose is the only purpose that matters. Apart from God people set their hearts on getting rich or being happy or accomplishing certain goals. But if we achieve any purposes apart from God?s, no matter how noble or impressive, they?re vain and worthless.

If God will certainly fulfill his purpose does that mean I kick back and do nothing? No. Dig in. Pursue God. Read his word and obey it. Devise some good plans to bless someone and go after them. Ask yourself, how can I glorify God today? Get involved in your church. Seek to encourage someone or help the weak. Try to overflow with thanksgiving. Who can you reach out to? How can you give to the poor? How can you use your talents to serve God?

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for you. He won?t fail, forget or mess up. No one can thwart him from fulfilling his purpose for your life. Satan and all the demons in hell can?t prevent Jesus from fulfilling his purpose for you. All the armies on earth, no government, ruler, boss, unkind husband, or ignorant neighbor can derail God?s intentions for you. In fact, they are tools in God?s hands to shape you.

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for you even if you?ve failed miserably, blown it and gotten off track. Just repent, turn again to Jesus and ask him to fulfill his purpose for you.

Heaven will be a celebration of God fulfilling his glorious purposes in our lives. We?ll say, so THAT?S why I wrecked my car. Oh THAT?S why we were transferred to Arkansas. THAT?S why you gave me the wackiest roommate on the planet. We?ll praise Jesus for the infinite genius of his plans and the unexpected ways he fulfilled them.

Tell Jesus you want to live for his purpose. Ask him to fulfill it in you. And thank him that he will.

Never Miss Any Goodness

I'm at that point in life where I have to start thinking about colleges and careers (well, I'm a few years early, but I am a girl, you know, and girls like to have plans). While it is a very joyful process, it is also very daunting, considering that I don't want to make the wrong choice–you know, I don't want to pursue a career that is against God's plan for me.

But, after reading your article, Mr. Altrogge, I realized that I don't have to worry any longer. I've been trusting myself to make my life plan, and not God. I need to entrust my future to God. I need to "tell Jesus [I] want to live for his purpose," "ask him to fulfill it in [me]," and "thank him that he will." Thank you Mr. Altrogge–that was very eye-opening and encouraging!

    Hey Mark,
Great post! as always! I was just listening to Alistair Begg this morning and he was talking about this very thing. Sometimes we doubt whether God remembers us and we feel forsaken in the messes that we sometimes make of our lives. Even in the mistakes and messes, God is still the same provident and sovereign One. I'm so thankful that He fashions and molds my life for His purposes and for His glory.
I can't wait to hear the Bluegrass worship album that'll come out of having this six-string banjo! Maybe a song about a dog in a diaper?…:)

I've had a few "so THAT’S why…" times in my life…didn't have to wait for heaven! :)
Long story short on one of them: I have a physical handicap that at one time actually, literally, saved my life!

    Thanks for your post, Mark!

    Hi Blaise,

I'm so glad it was encouraging to you. Yep, you can rest assured the Lord WILL fulfill his purpose for you. He is far more interested in you fulfilling his purpose even than you are. Thanks Blaise!

I hadn't even thought of a dog in a diaper song, but it does have a certain catchy alliteration to it! Thanks Ron!

Wow, Mary Ann, I'd like to hear that story sometime. Yes, sometimes God lets us have a few THAT'S why times even in this life…
