The secret to spiritual joy and success is to meditate on God’s word in order to obey it.
Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:7-8)
Joshua was about to embark upon the biggest challenge of his life – leading Israel to conquer the promised land. His arsenal was not thousands of chariots, swords and spears, but the book of the law God had given Moses. If he “kept” this book, meditating on it daily, not swerving to the left or right he’d have success.
Each of us has a “promised land” in this life to conquer. It’s God’s will that we be successful in this good fight as we learn to obey all Jesus commanded and become more and more conformed to his likeness. And the secret to our success, our secret weapon by which we overcome temptation and put to death sin in the power of the Spirit is the word of God. God told Joshua to meditate on the word he had given Moses day and night. It was not to leave Joshua’s mouth. He was to speak this word to himself and others. He was to chew on it. Contemplate it. Think about it. Apply it to his life and seek to obey every single part of it.
If meditating on God’s word was so important for Joshua’s success to conquer the land that lay ahead of him, how much more important is God’s word for our success to defeat the lies of the enemy, the temptations of the world, and the desires of our flesh. God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, a source of strength and encouragement, and filled with wonderful promises. God reveals himself, teaches and counsels us through his word.
How easy it is to get up in the morning and check our email, Facebook, news, tweets and Instagram. None of these are wrong but none will contribute as much to our spiritual success as dwelling on God’s word.
If you’re not doing so already, try to take some time every day to meditate on Scripture. You don’t have to read a large portion – read one chapter or a few paragraphs or one Psalm and take some time to chew on it. Some people write thoughts and notes in the margins of their Bible or a journal. You can write a Bible verse on a Post-it note and stick it on the back of your iPhone or your refrigerator to refer to during the day.
