Our God Is Over-The-Top. So Raise Your Expectations. Then Raise them Again…

Our God is over-the-top.

He could have created one kind of butterfly or three kinds of birds. Oh no. Not our God. Though no one knows exactly, it is estimated that there are 20,000 species of butterflies in the world. Not 20, not 200, not 2000 – but 20,000! There are approximately 6000 species of amphibians. Close to 10,000 species of birds, 30,000 kinds of fish, 5000 kinds of mammals and 8000 kinds of reptiles. And this should bless you – scientists estimate there are 950,000 species of insects!

Our God is over-the-top! He is over-the-top generous with his grace and blessings. He began by lavishing us with his most precious possession, his own Son, to redeem us. You can’t get any more over-the-top than that. He says in Ephesians 2:7:

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

God’s riches of his grace to us in Jesus are “immeasurable” – they can’t ever possibly be measured. It will take God “the coming ages” – not simply the coming “age”, but the coming ages – in other words, eternity – to show us his grace in kindness to us in Jesus. Ephesians 3:20-21 says:

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

The Greek word for “far more abundantly” means “exceedingly above”– Paul can’t find the words to express how over-the-top God is. God does exceedingly abundantly far more than all we ask or think.

Our God is over-the-top! He is over-the-top generous with his grace and blessings. He began by lavishing us with his most precious possession, his own Son, to redeem us.

What can you think or imagine to ask of God? What are you asking him for your family members, your children, your neighbors? Whatever you’re asking, you can’t even begun to scratch the surface of what God is going to do. Ask God for whatever you want. Ask him to do great things with your children. Ask him to do great things in your life. He’s going to do more. Far more. Exceedingly abundantly over-the-top more. You are asking God to save someone. God says, not only will I save her, I will use her to influence thousands and generations beyond herself. We have no idea what God will do.

It would be like asking for God to make one kind of butterfly and he says, “Not only will I gladly do that but I’ll make 20,000 kinds.”

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind! Psalm 31:19

Have a great expectations of God this year. Ask him for great things. He has abundant goodness stored up for those who fear and seek him.
