So Much More Than Victory Over Sin

It?s not enough to stop sinning.? God has way more for us.

I love this quote by Jerry Bridges in The Disciplines of Grace:

“If someone in our fellowship who had been stealing made a definitive break with that practice, we would rejoice over a major victory won. But Paul would not be satisfied until that person had also acquired a generous spirit of helping others in need. The person must put on generosity as well as put off dishonesty.”

This is the power of the Gospel. ?Jesus? life, death and resurrection power don’t simply empower us to quit sinning.? God’s not satisfied until we’re overflowing and abounding with Christlike fruit.

So it?s not enough that we stop cursing and complaining; we must grow in thankfulness and praise.

It?s not enough to stop hurting people; we must become servants who lay down our lives for others.

It?s not enough to stop lying; we must use our tongues to tell the truth, encourage and build others up.

It?s not enough to stoically endure pain; we must become people who rejoice in all things, knowing God uses our trials to make us like Christ.

It?s not enough to forgive those who sin against us; we must do good to them and bless them.

It?s not enough to not envy; we must rejoice when when others are blessed.

It?s a major victory when God helps us stop sinning. ?But what glory it brings him when his mighty power forms the character of Christ in us.? So be encouraged today.? If you’re a believer, God is at work in you not only to give you victory over sin but to live his life through you and form his Son in you.
