God Is Faithful…Even When I’m Faithless

I’m so grateful that God is faithful.

I’m 100% sure that if God wasn’t faithful, I wouldn’t still be a Christian.

Life is simply too hard, too complicated, too confusing, and too painful for me to make it on my own.

But God is faithful, and he has sustained me through depression, drew near to me when I was brokenhearted, and lifted my head as I walked through heartbreaking trials. He has proven time and again that his grace is sufficient for me.

But as sweet and precious as my experiences of God’s faithfulness have been, I don’t need them to know that God is faithful.

Again and again, scripture tells me that faithfulness is woven deep into the character of God. It’s simply part of his glorious character. God is holy. God is love. God is justice. And God is faithful.

How exactly is God faithful? Here are 5 glorious ways.

1. God Is Faithful To Fulfill His Promises

The rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold… (Psalm 19:9-10)

Scripture contains thousands of promises from God, and God is faithful to fulfill every single one of those promises. It really is an absolutely staggering thing to think about. Why would God promise to do anything for me? He doesn’t owe me anything. I’ve sinned against him time and time again. I’ve doubted his promises.

And yet Scripture says that God is faithful to bring about every promise he has made. If God wasn’t faithful to his word, I couldn’t have any confidence in him. My faith would be dashed to pieces because I couldn’t rely upon him.

But unlike me, God never makes a promise that he can’t 100% keep. He is absolutely, completely, and totally faithful to his promises.

Speaking of God’s promises, Charles Spurgeon says:

As you read them over, one after the other, you say to yourselves, “This is my checkbook. I can take out the promises as I want them, sign them by faith, present them at the great Bank of Grace, and come away enriched with present help in time of need.” That is the way to use God’s promises.

2. God Is Faithful To Forgive My Sins

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

I’m so incredibly grateful that God is faithful to forgive my sins. He is not petty and he doesn’t hold grudges. When I sin, he doesn’t give me the cold shoulder or make me go through some sort of elaborate ritual in order to be forgiven.

The forgiveness equation is gloriously simple. I confess my sins to God, he forgives them. And because God is faithful, I don’t need to worry that maybe this time he won’t forgive my sins. I don’t need to be stricken with fear that I’ve pushed God too far.

Rather, just like the father in the story of the Prodigal Son, God eagerly waits for me to return to him in repentance. And when I do return, he wraps me in the cloak of forgiveness and celebrates.

3. God Is Faithful To Make Me More Like Jesus Christ

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

God is the master craftsman, and every day God is faithful to shape me more and more into the image of his Son. He is using every circumstance – every blessing and every backache, every joy and every sorrow – to make me like Jesus Christ.

He began the good work in me when he saved me, and he is determined to finish the work he started. Because God is faithful, nothing can keep him from accomplishing his glorious purposes in my life.

In John 10:28, Jesus said, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

That is such a sweet, sweet promise. No one and nothing can take me out of the hands of Jesus. He will hold me fast and continue to transform me more and more into his image. Because God is faithful, I’m confident that he will finish the saving work he began in me.

4. God Is Faithful To Work All Things For My Good

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).

God is faithful.

God is good.

God is sovereign.

When you mix all three together, you have a God who works EVERYTHING together for my good. Every blessing, every trial, every heartache, and every sorrow is being used by God for my good

God has called me according to his purpose, and nothing can thwart his purpose for me. God really does have a good plan for my life, and that plan is absolutely invincible. He has resolved to use everything in my life for my good.

As John Piper says, “If all things work together for my good, then I cannot be ultimately defeated in the cause of Christ.” Isn’t that good news? Nothing, and I mean nothing, falls outside of God’s faithfulness to work all things together for my good. This gives me such confidence in God.

5. God Is Faithful To Meet All My Needs

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)

Are you starting to see how God’s faithfulness moves from the big to the small? In other words, if God is faithful to deal with my greatest problem (sin that separates me from him), he’ll also be faithful to me in the smallest of details.

God is faithful to meet all my needs, and I do mean all. Spiritual and emotional needs. Physical needs. Financial needs. There is no need too small for God. He is a good Father who loves to take care of his children.

I get small glimpses of this in the way I relate to my children. It makes me really happy to be able to bless them and provide for them. It brings me such joy to give them good gifts. If that’s how I feel, then how much more must God delight in providing everything I need?

Delighting In A Faithful God

Even though I am fickle, weak, and even faithless at times, God remains faithful to me. He doesn’t desert me, doesn’t throw up his hands in frustration when I fall short. His faithfulness is higher than the heavens.

2 Timothy 2:13 gloriously puts it like this: “…if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.”

I’m so grateful God is faithful.

  4. Thank you so very much for these powerful words of exhortation and comfort. Nothing could possibly keep one going – AGAINST ALL ODDS – than the realisation of God’s faithfulness. I needed to reassure myself of this and just googled the topic. I’ve been doubly reassured!

  5. TY so much, exactly what I needed today. I knowingly sinned & felt that HE was probably done with me, or that maybe I was just a bad person still. My mind was everywhere feeling bad until I read this, TY again. GOD’S continued Mercy & Grace for us All.
